Throughout Advent, we watched as our parish’s Jesse Tree was
slowly covered with handmade ornaments representing different moments in
salvation history. Yet all the while,
the tree remained dark. At last, on
Christmas Eve, the lights were lit, and throughout the Christmas season, we
have enjoyed a new vision of salvation history, one illuminated, and brought to
fulfillment, with the coming of Jesus.
Light reveals what has been hidden in darkness. This weekend we celebrate the Epiphany – the revelation to the Gentiles. Our reading from Isaiah reminds the
Israelites that, from the darkness of exile, they are called to shine forth as
God’s light infuses them; this is not a choice, but an imperative, a
responsibility. The light of a star
brought the wise men to Jesus (Matthew), revealing him to be the Light of the World. On the path to salvation, we are called to
bring the Light of Christ to others, to be a light in the darkness for all to
see.
This reflection was based on notes from Fr. Pat's Thursday Scripture class.
