The Seven Sorrows of the Virgin

Mary's encounter with Simeon -- when he tells her, as we heard this past Sunday, you yourself a sword shall pierce -- is the first of what have come to be known as the "Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary" (the others being the flight into Egypt, the loss of Jesus in the temple, meeting Jesus on the way to Calvary, Jesus' death on the Cross, her receipt of his pierced body, and the placing of the body in the tomb).  The Seven Sorrows have long been used as an inspiration for prayer and meditation for Catholics around the world.

Click on the video above (or here) for a video-mediated prayer of devotion to the Seven Sorrows.
