Sunday Gospel Reflection (John 15:1-8)
In today’s Gospel Jesus uses an analogy for his relationship
with us; Jesus is like a vine and we are the branches. We need to stay
connected to Jesus the Vine so that we will always have eternal strength and
nourishment and not become dry or life-less. We stay connected to the Vine by
receiving the Body of Christ in the Eucharist and becoming the Body of Christ
as a family of faith. When we receive Jesus as a part of the community we
receive God’s transforming Spirit that not only transforms bread and wine but
also transforms our minds and hearts. After receiving Jesus we leave Mass charged
like static electricity so that we might be sent into the world to share the spark
and energy of God’s presence and love with everyone we meet and, like a living
branch, to bloom and bear much fruit. Transforming the world is the challenging
mission that God calls each of us to, and we can do it as long as we stay
connected to the Vine.
