12th-century Benedictine abbess Hildegard of
Bingen was canonized on May 10, 2012. Philosopher
and mystic, she founded the monasteries of Rupertsberg and Eibingen and wrote
extensively on topics as wide-ranging as botany and theology. She is perhaps best known, however, for her
stunning musical compositions; her works constitute one of the largest
repertoires among medieval composers. You
can hear one of her compositions, O vis
aeternitatis, by clicking on the video above.
St. Hildegard’s life was dramatized by Margarethe von Trotta
in the film Vision in 2009.
