In place of death, there was light (Cynthia Bourgeault)

In Tolstoy’s great novella The Death of Ivan Ilyich, he describes how Ivan, down to the final days of his life, screaming and struggling against going into what he perceives to be the black sack of his death, suddenly experiences a shift like the sensation one sometimes experiences in a railway carriage when one thinks one is going backward while one is really going forward and suddenly becomes aware of the real direction… In place of death, there was light.  So that’s what it is!  he suddenly exclaimed aloud  What joy!
