Sunday Gospel Reflection, May 19, 2019: Behold, I make all things new...

Has the Resurrection transformed your world?

When, in John’s Gospel, Jesus issues a new commandment – love one another – it is so very important to him that he repeats it three times!  Love is not optional in Christianity; loving one another, and thereby manifesting our union with Jesus, is essential to the Christian message.  If we love one another, others will know we are Jesus’ disciples because we are actively fulfilling his commandment through our love for others.  Salvation is nothing short of God uniting all humankind in God’s love; by stating his new commandment and then following through with his own ultimate expression of love, Jesus has transformed the world of the disciples, conferring upon them a new mission as he unites them under one governing law:  love.

After Jesus’ Resurrection and Ascension, the Word of God goes forth, proclaimed by Paul and Barnabas as told in the Acts of the Apostles as they travel from city to city, uniting all who will listen to the good news.  And what is this good news if not Jesus’ invitation to love, an invitation that makes all things new?  The Book of Revelation transmits John’s vision of a new heaven and a new earth where God dwells with the human race.  The vision makes it clear that Jesus’ sacrifice has transformed the world through divine love for humankind.  It is a reason, as Psalm 145 recommends, to praise God’s name forever as we acknowledge not only the glorious splendor of his kingdom, but also God’s compassion and mercy and kindness.

God has shown his love for us through the most remarkable of gifts, the gift of his Son.  Jesus’ Resurrection should transform our world, clarifying our mission to love as he loved, and to proclaim that splendid love to all the world!
